Peace. Love. Junkstock. | {Megan}

October 15, 2015

Twice a year, one of my favorite events takes place on a farm on the outskirts of Omaha called Junkstock. I first heard of Junkstock a few years ago when my mom, owner of Barnyard Boutique, decided she wanted to be a vendor. Ever since then I have enjoyed going to help out my mom and also do a little shopping of my own. Each year the event has gotten bigger and better. During the Harvest Edition this past weekend, there were over 160 vendors. Every vendor is unique and offers something for everyone. Junkstock isn't just a place to shop. They have live music, many food trucks, activities for kids, and one of my most favorite things, many photo opportunities. Enjoy a few scenes from Junkstock below!

Tivoli Fest 2015

May 29, 2015

Happy Friday! It's Kali—the other girls and I wanted to share our Tivoli Fest 2015 experience with you all today! Every year, on Memorial Day weekend, Elk Horn, IA holds Tivoli Fest. It's Elk Horn's annual celebration of Danish heritage (you can read more about it here). My parents grew up in Elk Horn/Kimballton, and my whole family lives around there. Us girls don't always make it back every year, but luckily this year, we all made the trip back. Zac had weekend-long golf plans in Lincoln, so he did not come with me, but Zeke and Tad were able to also join us! It's always fun when the whole family gets together.

Saturday always starts off with the Mill to Mermaid 5k run. I tried it once years ago, and those hills just aren't for me, but Megan and Shelbie have competed in it for as many years as they can remember. This year, they were even lucky enough to have Tad and Zeke join them in the run. The race starts at the windmill in Elk Horn, and stretches all the way to the Mermaid fountain in Kimballton. It's definitely a challenging 5k due to the very long, very large hills.

Megan ended up winning her age group (20-29 years old)! Overall, Tad placed 6th, Zeke placed 9th, Megan placed 13th, and Shelbie placed 25th.

Post-run, our grandma Nadine made them some aebleskiver (aka the most delicious pancake balls ever) to recover!

I joined everyone in Elk Horn right as the parade was about to start. As in previous years, my mom had her Barnyard Boutique booth setup, and as always, I wanted everything!

^^ I ended up buying this for my front porch!

The weather wasn't the greatest (as usual on Memorial Day weekend), but it wasn't too terrible. I just wish the sun would've come out for a little bit! After the parade and lunch at our aunt Sherri's, we walked around to check out the different vendors. We also obviously had to go to the Egg Krate while we were there. I didn't end up buying anything this time, but Megan found a few gems.

After that, we all agreed it was time for a beer. We headed over to the fire station, where the Iowa Craft Beer Tent was all set up for the weekend.

In all the years I've been going to Tivoli Fest and just to Elk Horn in general, I don't remember ever taking a tour of the famous windmill, so since this was also Tad's first time at Tivoli Fest, we thought it'd be fun to finally do it!

After heading back to our parents house for a quick power nap, we went back to Elk Horn for the night's festivities. We did a little pre-gaming at Sherri and Joel's, watched the fireworks, then headed back to the fire station for more beer and music! All in all, it was a great weekend. If you've never been to Tivoli Fest, I'd highly recommend checking it out next year!

Honeymoon in the Dominican Republic | {Kali}

May 7, 2015

Zac and I spent last week on our honeymoon in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic! It was such an amazing and relaxing week in paradise.

We stayed at the Barceló Bávaro Beach Resort at the adults-only part of the resort (which was my one request). We actually still got access to the rest of the resort, which was great because most of the pools and restaurants were over there (kids were allowed in that part). The entire resort was pretty huge.

^^ First things first—we grabbed a drink & hit the beach right when we arrived!

^^ Night one—we got all dressed up to go eat dinner!

^^ Delicious desserts at restaurants Mexico Lindo and La Dolce Vita (the Italian restaurant)—strawberry cheesecake & tiramisu!

So, let's talk the food. I was actually very impressed with the food. It had its standard buffets that I think most resorts have when you do all-inclusive. They also had a bunch of restaurants that were included in the all-inclusive plan (there were two restaurants that weren't included). I thought all of the restaurants we were able to try were really good! My favorite was the Mexican restaurant, Mexico Lindo, while Zac's was the Italian restaurant, La Dolce Vita. We had heard it was important to make dinner reservations the first day we got there, so we did that.

The first night we had made reservations at one of the restaurants, Chez Gourmet. We got all ready and headed over there—only to find out we didn't quite read the rules carefully enough. Guys, if you visit this resort, make sure to bring a few pairs of pants and dress shoes! All of the restaurants at the resort have a formal dress code, and guys had to wear pants and closed-toe shoes. Zac showed up in a nice shirt, khaki shorts, and sandals. The hostess asked Zac to go change, but at that point he was already really hot in his long-sleeve shirt, so we ended up just eating at the buffet that night. Luckily, I had mentioned to him while we were packing for the trip to bring some jeans, so he had one pair and a pair of tennis shoes, so we were able to end up going to the restaurants the other nights!

^^ We ate at the Mexican restaurant, Mexico Lindo, one night—this was my favorite of all the restaurants we ate at!

We thought about doing an excursion and were certainly pitched all the offers they had (and many sounded tempting), but in the end, we decided we just wanted to spend all week relaxing by the beach and pool. I, of course, also had to work in a massage at the spa one of the days!

So, every day, we got up around 9am, put our swimsuits on, headed to the buffet to get breakfast (ham + cheese omelets, bacon, and pancakes were our usual choice), then headed to either the beach or pool and spent most of the day there.

Late afternoon, we'd head back to the room to get ready for the night. After we were all dolled up, we'd go to the other part of the resort where all the restaurants were. We usually would first go for a drink at the sports bar there, go to dinner, then we'd have some form of entertainment to go do or see after dinner.

Two of the nights were taken up by the draft, and then the fight, which we watched at the sports bar. One night, we went to the casino. I'm not a gambler at all, so I just watched Zac lose $20 in Blackjack! The last night we were there, we went to one of the shows at the resort. That night it was a rock band, and they were pretty good!

One of the nights, we decided to ditch the fancy restaurant reservations and just went to the sports bar. It was draft night, so Zac was hoping it'd be on one of the TVs in there. We asked the manager if he would change one of the TVs to the draft, and he tried for a good 20 minutes to figure it out. He finally pulled Zac into another room, with a huge projector screen, and we got the draft playing in there! By the time the draft started, the room was packed. Zac was pretty proud of himself for making that happen :)

^^ My view most days, with drink in hand, obviously.

The pools were massive! Most days we stayed at the adults-only pool, but one of the days we went to the other part of the resort because the pool there had a swim-up bar we wanted to check out.

^^ Lots of pretty, colorful art!

We also have to talk about the beach! I loved being on the beach while Zac loved the pools—so we split up our time so we could enjoy both! It was by far the best beach I'd been to—white sand and the clearest, most blue water I've ever seen.

I also have to mention how friendly everyone was! The employees of the resort were all so friendly and so happy, which really made the experience all that much better. There was a pretty big language barrier (most of the employees only knew a little English), but they were probably some of the nicest employees I've ever encountered! We also met four other couples that we really enjoyed talking to. There were couples we met from Nebraska, North Dakota, Alabama, and Ohio. We met them all at inconvenient times during the trip (we met the Alabama couple on their last night, and we met the Ohio couple on our last night), so we didn't get to spend too much time with them. While I enjoyed just being with Zac for most of the trip, it was still fun to hang out with other couples too!

^^ Mini complimentary Coors Light cans in our room, otherwise all the beer we drank was Presidente.

^^ Another night we got dressed up to go to dinner! After dinner, we went back to the sports bar to watch the fight. I honestly could not have cared less about the fight, and certainly would not have watched it had we been at home. But, I'm glad we did watch it because we met a really fun couple from North Dakota who we hung out with the rest of the night!

If you ever go, we'd definitely recommend staying at the adults-only part because it was much quieter than the other part. Plus, I just didn't want to be around a bunch of kids (no offense to kids, love 'em, but I'm on vacation..). Because we still got access to everything at the other part of the resort, we didn't feel like we were missing out on anything. Even though the adults-only part was more chill, they still had fun games and music going on at the pool/beach in the afternoons.

The only other beach vacation I've been on is Cancun with my family a few years back, so that's all I had to compare it to. Dominican Republic definitely beat Cancun by a long shot. The food, the beaches, the pools, the people—everything was amazing. I truly couldn't think of one thing that I would have wanted to be different. I'd HIGHLY recommend Punta Cana as a vacation destination—especially the Barceló Bávaro resort!

Summer Concert Survival Guide | {Shelbie}

March 27, 2015

{Better Than Ezra – summer 2014}

With warmer weather approaching, we can all tell summer is near. What's associated with summer? It's simple. Summer equals boating, late night bike rides, picnics, smoky bonfires and everything in between. There's one thing in particular that I, along with a lot of people, look forward to the most—summer concerts and festivals.

{Blues Traveler, Sugar Ray, Smash Mouth, and Uncle Kracker in Omaha – summer 2014}

I've always been an avid concert-goer. Growing up, the group of friends I ran around with always tried to attend every concert possible. In my opinion, nothing compares to the atmosphere experienced at a live concert. I'm not lying when I say that I've been to quite the array of concerts. Tech n9ne, Childish Gambino, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers, Maroon 5, Jake Owen, Gregory Alan Isokav, Alice In Chains, 311, Blink 182 and Better Than Ezra are just a few. With that being said, my favorite type of concerts are outdoor festivals. I'm sure a lot of you have been to some sort of outdoor concert/festival. In my experience, there actually needs to be a lot of thought that goes into attending. From your attire to the vehicle you drive, every part of the concert journey must be considered.

I have some suggestions I would like to share with all you crazy music fanatics.

{Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers at Red Rocks – September 2014}

Your Getup:
The questions you need to ask yourself are:
• Is it an indoor or outdoor concert?
• Is it an all-day festival or just a two-hour show?
• What is the weather supposed to be like?
• Will I need a jacket just in case?
• Will I be standing or sitting?

If you are attending a longer concert you should definitely go for the comfort route. Nobody wants to hear you complain about how uncomfortable your shoes are! Outdoor concerts can be unpredictable when it comes to weather, believe me. My first suggestion would be to simply check the weather! If all appears to be clear, sunny skies, be my guest and wear that pair of high-waisted cut-offs you've been dying to rock. Another thing to consider when attending an outdoor concert is the location. Will you be groovin' to music on a dirt dance floor? My recommendation would be to wear something you aren't totally attached to. Things get dirty and if you're like me, you'll be in the midst of all the action, which means sharing sweat with tons of strangers. Lastly, remember there will always be that "die-hard" fan who can't control his booze.

Transportation:
The questions you need to ask yourself:
• How far am I traveling for this concert?
• How many people do I have riding along?
• Will I have to drive on any gravel or dirt roads?
• Will I have to park in the grass?

Most people only think of gas mileage and the number of seats when they consider modes of transportation. When attending a concert, there is always the issue of parking to take into consideration. I once attended a concert where everyone was forced to park in the grass. With the last act on the stage, a thunderstorm rolled on in. Two girls driving a small two-wheel car out of the muddy grass field in the pouring rain isn't my fondest memory. With that being said, ALWAYS think about the weather and where you will be parking.

{Gregory Alan Isakov – January 2015}

Beverages: (Yes, beverages needs its own section!)
The questions you need to ask yourself:
• Am I allowed to take any beverages into the concert?
• What type of beverages will be provided at the concert?
• How much will the beverages cost?
• Do I plan on consuming alcohol at the concert?

When attending a concert at a venue or arena, normally people aren't able to take drinks in with them. That could also be said for some outdoor concerts too. There are also outdoor concerts that I've attended and they will allow you to bring coolers and chairs. My suggestion would be to take drinks in with you if at all possible—nobody has time for those overpriced drinks! If you're attending an all-day event, you definitely need to drink lots of water. Being dehydrated when your favorite artist is playing is no fun! Even you beer drinkers need to be consuming water. If you don't want to lug around cans or bottle of liquor, a nice alternative would be to buy shooters. They are small, accessible and make it easy to monitor how much liquor you've consumed.

{Lady Gaga in Minneapolis – spring 2014}

Miscellaneous:
Let's be honest, there's always that one thing you wish you would've brought along! Here is a list of miscellaneous things that are useful to bring with to an outdoor concert:
• Sunscreen
• Portable phone charger
• Sunglasses
• Dry shampoo
• Concealer
• Face oil blotter
• Ponytail
• Flask
• Camera

I hope everyone has a fun, concert-filled summer—I know I will! In fact, I get to kick my summer concert adventure off by attending the Chase Rice, Jake Owen and Kenny Chesney concert in May in Des Moines! You could say I'm a little excited.
